Second Life:
North Lanarkshire Island
Second Life is a 3-D virtual world, in which visitors create a virtual character (or avatar) that represents them “in-world”.
Our latest project, Pathways to Employment, in partnership with the European Social Fund, North Lanarkshire Council, the Scottish Libraries and Information Council, and the Continuing Education Gateway, involves the development of a virtual Library, Learning Centre, and Museum on North Lanarkshire Island within Second Life and is designed to equip people with the IT skills they need to increase their employability in real life.
On North Lanarkshire Island the sun always shines, the temperature is a steady 25 degrees centigrade and accessing information and learning materials is fun.
Our virtual library spans three floors, providing access to library resources, the Internet and a range of on-line learning materials developed to support users through qualifications such as EqualSkills and the European Computer Driving Licence. There are "chill zones" where visitors can put their feet up and relax and Information Zones where they can access information coming straight from BBC Newsfeeds.
The Library also features study areas and giant plasma screens to deliver online learning materials; and there is a Conference Area with room for one hundred delegates, and an outside Auditorium which, in the future, will host a number of 'gigs' featuring local talent. There is also a Museum featuring a wide range of changing exhibitions.
Employability Centre
The latest phase of the Pathways to Employment project features an Employability Centre providing direct access to resources that will enable you to make better career choices. The Employability Centre will open in early summer 2010, so check back then.
